Born in Xi’an in 1970, graduated from Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts in 1990, majoring in design. From 1992-1993 he taught at Yan’an Arts Academy. From 1994 to 1997 he spent 4 years working artistically in Yuanmingyuan (the old Summer Palace in Beijing) and Songzhuang Artist Village. At present he is working and living in Chengdu.
ZHOU Bin is a hard working and creative artist. Since 1998 he created nearly a hundred action art works and lots of installation art and video art works, and participated in lots of exhibitions and artist exchanges in Japan, United Kingdom, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Israel, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia and other countries.
ZHOU Bin also joined in to organize art activities and found UP-ON Live Art Group in 2007 to support the development of Live Art. He organized UP-ON First International Live Art Festival in 2008 and invited more than 40 international artists to come to China for artistic creation and exchange. In March 2009 he organised the multi-media performance “Celebration – The 1/6 Comments of Freedom”.
Lately Zhou Bin deals not only with the artistic part of performance art but also with the theoretical one. He thinks that performance art in China has to overcome its own limitations and that it is extremely important that Chinese artists come to terms with their own creative practice and academic theories.
