From August 8 to September 9, 2010, C5Art will present [We are all wooden people, don’t say a word and do not move, let’s see who can take a firm stand] – a solo exhibition from Zhou Yi, featuring a series of paintings, objects, video and photographic works.
Zhou Yi was born in 1972 in Beijing, immigrated with his family to the United States in 1991 and lived there for 14 years. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Cooper Union School of Art and MFA in Painting from Tyler School of Art, served an artist residency at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. In 2005, Mr. Zhou returned back to China, was offered teaching from the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing, where he spent last five years developing a pedagogical approach to art education based on the inter-disciplinary foundation course in color study developed by Josef Albers, which was first introduced at the Weimar Bauhaus, Black Mountain College and later at Yale University.
Zhou Yi’s experimental works capture subtle and everyday experiences in orderly structures. Based on rules, the objects and paintings are able to reveal various aspects of subjective perception. For the same reason the works are inextricably connected to play – games which are introspective and knowledge seeking. After all, Johan Huizinga suggested in his book “Homo Ludens” (Playing Man) that play is a necessary condition in the generation of culture.
