荷亥·梅耶出生於古巴哈瓦那的一个艺术家庭，由於政局变故，他迁徙至西班牙，定居并工作至今。「我用电线、纸张等不同材料来再现记忆中家乡的景象，这些景象也正是我文化的一部分，是我的根、我的家乡的象徵。」

受到移民经歷影响，荷亥·梅耶的作品基调多以离散、流徙為主。被连根拔起的大树，裸露的根柢尚还附著片片碎土，悬浮飘宕於虚空之中，而枝头的树叶或如作品《秋天》中寥寥无几，或如作品《再生》中般鬱鬱葱葱，个中反差即可窥见被困於十字路口游移不定的他。

荷亥.梅耶怀念文化、宗教尚未成為社会政治傀儡的那个时代。因此，他嚮往那些未开化的尊崇自然力量的老村庄。这种对文化、宗教和自然的敬仰之情在他的作品中充分的流露出来，如作品《精神链接》及《精神断链》。

但丁说过：「艺术是对自然最高的模仿，就像徒弟模仿师傅。在某种程度上，自然就是上帝。」而这也是荷亥.梅耶坚信的。

此次在香港艺术中心展出的是荷亥·梅耶2012年最新创作的作品系列。狮语画廊会将部分收益捐予香港艺术中心作其艺术发展基金使用。

Jorge Mayet is a Cuban artist now living and working in Spain. “I recreate with wires, paper and other elements my own landscapes which at the same time form part of my culture, my roots and the identity of my town.”

The sculptures or paintings of Jorge Mayet are largely influenced by his immigrant experience of loss, hope, recovery, and guilt. His uprooted tree installations, with roots prominently hanging and floating in the void, connote an uprooted human being. The trees either have no more leaves, like in his piece “Autumn” or invigorating colors, like in “Renaissance”, as if he is caught in a conflict at crossroads.

Jorge Mayet’s work is also a reflection on culture, religion and nature, notably with “Spiritual Connection” and “Spiritual Disconnection”. He remains nostalgic of the times when “culture and religions had not evolved and adapted themselves to sociopolitical environments”. Hence, the respect he always holds for “the old towns whose religion was based on the veneration and respect for the forces of nature”.

As Jorge Mayet believes, “Art imitates nature the best it can, as the disciple follows histeacher. That is why nature is a kind of God.” - Dante

The exhibition at Hong Kong Arts Centre unveils his most recent works from 2012. Leo Gallery will donate portion of the proceeds to Hong Kong Arts Centre for their arts development fund.
